Chapter 3: First Real Assignments

The next morning, Mumbai woke with its usual chaos. The shrill honk of cars, the shouts of street vendors, and the rumble of local trains blended into a symphony of the city. Shikha sat on her small PG bed, sipping her morning chai, the warm liquid comforting against her nerves. Her tiny room felt cozier today, now that she had begun to settle in. Books were stacked neatly on her desk, and her laptop sat ready, humming softly. Even the small photo of her parents reminded her why she had come here—to chase a dream bigger than Lucknow.

She opened her wardrobe and hesitated for a moment. Yesterday had been her first day; today needed a slightly different touch. She picked a light beige full-sleeve blouse tucked into charcoal grey tailored trousers, slipping into a slim brown belt and matching closed-toe shoes. Her navy blazer completed the look, making her feel confident and professional. She tied her hair into a neat low ponytail and checked her reflection. The tiny change from yesterday's outfit gave her a sense of freshness, a small boost of confidence for the day ahead.

The ride to the office was its usual adventure—crowded trains, people squeezing past each other, vendors shouting about vada pavs and chai. But today, Shikha felt a small thrill of excitement mixed with nerves. Today wasn't just orientation—it was her first real client work.

The office lobby was buzzing more than yesterday. Fresh articles moved with their notepads and laptops, exchanging shy greetings. A senior associate called everyone into the conference room.

"Today, you will be assigned your reporting partners," he said, scanning a sheet. "Shikha Sharma, Aditya Kapoor, Karan Mehra, Ritika Singh, Neha Deshmukh, Tara Mehra, and Sohail Khan, you'll be working under Himanshu Malhotra. He'll guide your work and review everything closely. Mistakes are expected, but how you handle them will show your potential."

Shikha nodded, trying to stay calm. The name sounded familiar—she had heard it during orientation—but she didn't feel anything beyond curiosity. Today was about work, and nothing else mattered.

The morning passed in a blur of files and instructions. Numbers, notes, and client information filled the pages. Mistakes happened, corrections were made, and slowly, the rhythm of the office began to make sense. Keyboards clicked, phones rang, and assistants dashed between desks with new papers. Each task taught her something new.

Lunchtime gave a small break from the busy morning. Shikha found a quiet corner in the cafeteria and opened her file to keep reviewing. Around her, the other trainees couldn't help whispering.

"Honestly," Neha said quietly, smirking, "he's... impressive. Calm, serious, and that presence."

Tara rolled her eyes playfully. "Sharp eyes, neat suit, jawline... and he notices everything. I feel like I'm under a microscope."

Ritika, shyly tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, whispered, "I think I'll be nervous in front of him forever."

Shikha listened just enough to understand the chatter but didn't care. She focused on her work, unaware of any glances that might have been cast her way.

The afternoon was a blur. More files arrived, each one messier than the last. Shikha corrected errors, double-checked figures, and learned to navigate the rhythm of the office. Back at their desks, the chaos continued—keyboards clicked, phones rang, and assistants dashed between desks with new papers.

By the time she packed her bag to leave, Shikha felt exhausted but proud. She had survived her first real client assignments, learned the office rhythm, and shared little moments of camaraderie and laughter with her group.

Mumbai still felt overwhelming, but small victories, gossiping moments, and brief glances made it feel... possible.

Tomorrow will be harder, she thought. But one file, one lesson, and one small success at a time.
